This is a recommendation for Matthew Spencer, whom I have known personally and professionally for a number of years. I have hired Matt on several occasions because of his expertise with personal computers, networking and computer training, and have been completely satisfied with his work, his abilities and his professionalism. Matt has performed emergency trouble-shooting and repair on my home computer on weekends when I have been unable to take it into the office for service. In addition, I hired him to train one of our staff in Women’s Studies who had to have her home computer reconfigured to allow access to particular data bases in order to achieve reasonable accommodation for her disability and allow her to continue to perform the essential functions of her job. In the former setting, I have been able to observe his work personally; in the latter I have received feedback from the staff member. In both settings, Matt has performed at or above expectations. He works quickly and efficiently, and is able to find ways to solve problems created by unusual demands from the end user. I was particularly impressed with the set up and training he did for the member of our staff. She had tried to use the standard protocols provided by the campus, but was unable to understand and apply the instruction. When we contacted Matt, he took care of the situation in one half-day session. This included assessing the equipment, communicating with on campus personnel, setting up the particular configuration needed for access, and training the staff member. I have also contacted Matt on an informal basis for recommendations of appropriate and cost-effective privacy and security software. He has always been able to provide understandable comparisons of different options and I have benefited from his suggestions.
